Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Tyddyn Bleiddyn consists of the fragmentary remains of a chambered long cairn located within a field which slopes gently from the northeast to the southwest overlooking the Elwy Valley. Chambered long cairns date to the early Neolithic (c. 4,200BC - 3,000BC). This cairn takes the form of an irregular mound which measures 26m along its long axis which is orientated from the northwest to the southeast; it is 11m in width and up to a maximum of 0.5m in height. Within the mound are three hollows, of which two contain rubble or upright stones. The hollow at the north western end of the cairn reveals ten upright stones which enclose a chamber c. 2.5m in length and 0.6m in depth.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The features are an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retain significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of both intact ritual and burial deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. Chambered long cairns may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
