Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

This substantial standing stone probably dates to the Bronze Age (c.2300 BC - 800 BC). It is located on the lower eastern slopes of Moel Gwynus approximately 600m ESE of the summit, immediately to the east of a north-south oriented field boundary. The standing stone is 1.8m in height and 0.7m by 0.7m in length and width respectively. The stone is roughly quadrilateral in section and rises to a blunt point at the top. Packing stones are visible around the base. From its location there are good views to the east over a valley.

This well-preserved monument retains significant archaeological potential as there is a strong chance that associated archaeological deposits and features may survive underneath the associated field bank. It is an important local landmark and represents a notable element in the wider prehistoric and funerary landscape.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 10m in diameter.
