Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The settlement at Clogwyn yr Eryr is a well preserved example of a small upland hafod. The monument comprises the lower stone foundations of two buildings, probably domestic dwellings, which probably date to the prehistoric or Medieval periods. Measuring c. 12m long, both buildings were divided into two internal compartments and lie together within the protection of a small walled enclosure. Associated with the settlement is a further stone walled enclosure, possibly intended for stock control.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric or medieval settlement. The monument forms an important element within the wider prehistoric or medieval contexts and added interest is given by the number of surviving features and the possibility of a long period of use or re-use. The scheduled area may be expected to contain a wide range of archaeological information, including chronological detail and evidence in regard to construction techniques and agricultural methods. Preserved floor levels are likely both within and surrounding the buildings. Rectangular huts may be part of a larger cluster of settlements and their importance can be further enhanced by their group value.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
