Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a cairn, c.6m in diameter, which probably dates to the Bronze Age (c.2300 - 800 BC). The perimeter is defined by a ring of upright kerb stones, mostly present as a single line but with short stretches of double width. In the centre of the cairn is an open stone lined cist 1.2m long by 0.9m. Although having suffered some past disturbance the cairn is a clear example of its type and retains many of its original features, notably the perimeter kerb stones and stone lined central cist.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The features are an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retain significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of both intact ritual and burial deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence, including a buried land surface beneath the cairn. Cairns may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can be further enhanced by their group value.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
