Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a well preserved enclosed settlement, probably dating from the Iron Age/Romano-British period (c. 800 BC - AD 400). The settlement consists of four rubble-built circular huts enclosed by a largely earthen bank with an entrance at the south-west. Three of the huts are inter-linked by low rubble banks. The site demonstrates many well preserved structural features.

While long views to the north-east to the Afon Ogwen valley are possible, the settlement was not a defensive site and the significant views would have been medium and short to Llyn Cororion and over the fields farmed from the settlement. These are primarily to the north and east.

The monument is a good example of a lowland enclosed settlement. It is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement practices. It is an important relic of the prehistoric landscape and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of environmental and structural evidence, including preserved internal and external floor levels.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
