Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument comprises two hut circles, the foundations of round houses, and a surviving fragment of a contemporary field system with which the huts were closely connected. The field system is delineated by an orthostatic wall which demonstrates remarkably good preservation. The site is a scattered, unenclosed settlement dating from the Iron Age or Romano-British period (c. 800 BC - AD 400). It is located within a landscape of intensive prehistoric habitation.
The monument is important for its diversity of features and the survival of the part of the field system most intimately connected with the settlement. It is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric domestic life and social organisation. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of structural evidence and associated archaeological features and deposits. The significance of the site is also enhanced by its location within an archaeological landscape of intensive prehistoric habitation.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
