Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of an isolated hut circle and associated features that probably date to the Iron Age or Romano-British period (c. 800 BC - AD 400). It is located on the plateau top of a locally prominent limestone hill in mature woodland. The hut is substantially built using large orthostats and demonstrates particularly good internal facing stonework. The presence of additional features close to the hut including a pond and a stone cut well or storage pit further enhance the potential of the site.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric domestic construction practices. In an area where other examples are rare, the hut circle is remarkably well preserved. The monument retains significant archaeological potential and there is a strong probability that structural evidence has survived, together with internal and external floor surfaces. The presence of a later trackway suggests the continuing importance of the site in subsequent periods.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is rectangular and measures 30 N-S by 35m E-W.
