Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a well-preserved unenclosed group of stone-footed round huts that probably date to the Iron Age or Romano-British period (c.800 BC - AD 400) and a number of associated stone walled paddocks or enclosures. Also present is a long hut indicating later, possibly seasonal use of the site. The importance of the monument is enhanced by its proximity to other similar settlements within Cwm Gelli Iago.
The site lies on a natural shelf on a NE-facing hillside at the SW side of, and overlooking, Cwm Gelli Iago.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric domestic construction practices. The high quality of the remaining features and the impressive variety of surviving elements, huts and paddocks offer significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability that structural evidence has survived, together with internal and external floor surfaces.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
