Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument comprises three interlinked hut circles, the foundations of round houses probably dating from the Iron Age/Romano-British period (c. 800 BC - AD 400). The huts are orthostatic in construction and are set around a sunken yard area which is approached by a clear trackway. The floor areas appear intact. Associated with the settlement are a number of terraces which are likely to be the remains of a contemporary field system.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric domestic life and social organisation. Given that the site is low-lying and set amidst fertile agricultural land, the settlement is a rare survival. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of structural evidence and associated archaeological features and deposits.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
