Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a small hillfort, probably dating to the Iron Age (c.800BC
Situated on open hillside to the NE of Llyn Nantlle Uchaf, the fort is on a rocky knoll which forms the W end of a small ridge. The enclosure is of irregular shape, c.30m in diameter and surrounded by dry stone walling of large slabs which is about 2.5m in thickness with a slight batter on both sides. Externally it stands to about 1m in places, but internally it is mostly levelled. There is a much-ruined entrance on the W side.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement and defence. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
