Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

There are two sites scheduled under this number: a) the quarry barracks and associated buildings (called the Anglesey Barracks) and b) an incline of the 'A' series with double-track self-acting planes and three brake-drum houses.

a. The barracks consist of two rows of twelve units, the rows approximately 20ft (6m) apart and facing one another. Each unit measures about 20ft x 10ft (6m x 3m) and is divided into two rooms. The larger room, approximately 11ft (3.4m) across, contains a fireplace and a doorway leading into the smaller room. All the roofing slates and timbers have been removed. Two latrine blocks, one to the rear of each barrack block and a small, detached house, possibly accommodation for a foreman or more senior worker which lies to the south-west, are also scheduled.

b. The incline is in three parts, each part with a brake-drum house at the upper end. All have been restored by Gwynedd County Council in the past.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the slate industry. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
