Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a well-preserved medieval moated homestead. There are two ditches and a central bank with traces of an external bank on the NE and SW sides. The two ditches may be connected on the NE and SW sides. The interior is 42m by 34m and contains traces of a building in the E corner. The entrance appears to have been on the NW side, where there is a stone causeway cutting through the two ditches, about 4.5m wide. The E corner of the site, which lies in a separate field, has been filled in and the ditches are not visible from the ground. A modern field wall crosses the site from NW to SE and in addition to this there is a denuded bank running across the site from SW to NE, the line of which is marked by two oak trees. The ditches appear to have been fairly shallow, although in the N corner the exterior ground surface rises one metre above the level of the outer ditch.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval settlement and defence. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive and is a square with sides of 100m.
