Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The base of a decorated stone which tapers to the top. The front is carved in two framed panels. The lower contains a worn cruciform single-strand ring-knot surrounded by interlace. The upper shows the lower portion of a figure wearing a pleated garment. The right edge has an inscription in half uncials which may be read downwards as ESILLI (?) MAR:QUENO. It has not been translated. The left edge and the back are plain. It was probably a grave-marker and dates to the 10th-11th centuries AD.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the early medieval period. The stone has been moved from its original location to the sheltered protection of Bardsey Island Chapel.
