Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

A Roman fort and annexe situated on level ground alongside the Afon Llugwy. The site has been partially excavated.

The site consists of a fort measuring 131m by 120m (including defences) with an annexe adjoining the W side measuring 131m by 91m. The defences are shown by the excavations to have consisted of two external ditches and a stone and clay rampart, dated to c.100 AD. The annexe was enclosed by a single stone wall.

The defences now appear as a single terrace 1-1.5m high.

A few remains of buildings were found inside the stone wall, but none is now visible. The annexe contains a number of stone structures, the walls remain to a height of 1.5m. A series of modern farm buildings overlie the defences on the N side, and a drainage ditch runs between the fort defences and the annexe.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of Roman settlement and defence. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structures themselves may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
