Cadw's description

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of the medieval Capel Dewi, Llwynhendy, a chapel probably dating from the twelfth or thirteenth century AD. The remains comprise the S-facing wall and the SW corner of the nave. The coursed rubble wall measures about 12m in length, 0.8m in thickness and about 2.6m in height. There has been partial collapse in the centre of the wall, probably indicative of the location of a doorway. Both corners are built of fine dressed quoins.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval ecclesiastical organisation. The monument forms an important element within the wider medieval context and the structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information in regard to chronology, building techniques and functional detail. The surrounding area may be expected to contain further associated archaeological deposits (there are historical references to a graveyard).

The area scheduled comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is irregular and measures 15m from ESE to WNW by up to 9m transversely.
