Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of an eighteenth century lead mine including its water-management and transport systems, extraction and dressing processes with their power systems. The main feature of the site is the large Cornish beam engine. The complete south-east elevation has several windows, steam pipe and girder openings, and a driver’s door adjacent to the bob wall. The bob wall is almost complete, with a central ‘plug’ archway at ground level facing the shaft. The interior of the engine house is filled with rubble from the collapsed north-east and north-west walls. Spoil tips extend to the south west. The remains of the dressing plant 100m to the south are partially buried and heavily overgrown.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance and illustrate our knowledge and understanding of mining technology from a single period. Lead mines may be part of a larger cluster of industrial monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is an an oblong measuring 30m by 10m.
