Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. .
The monument comprises the remains of two round barrows, burial monuments which probably date to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). The barrows are inter-visible and located 390m apart on the afforested hilltop ridge of Mynydd Rhos-wen. The north-eastern barrow is circular on plan and measures about 28m in diameter and 3m high. There is a disturbance hollow 1m deep in the centre and traces of a ditch on the west side. The south-eastern barrow is circular on plan, flat topped and measures about 22m in diameter and about 1.5m high with an indication of a kerb on the south east side.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The features are an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retain significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of both intact ritual and burial deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
