Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of earthwork enclosure, which probably dates to the Iron Age period (c. 800 BC - AD 74, the Roman conquest of Wales). A roughly sub-rectangular enclosure of 0.7ha measuring about 150m north-east to south-west by 50m occupies the south-western end of an isolated ridge. It is defined by scarps above steep natural slopes on the north-west and south-east, by a single bank c 3m high with an interior ditch c 0.4m deep on the north east and by bivallate defences including a simple entrance on the south west. It is possible that the enclosure may have extended further to the north-east to enclose the entire ridge-top.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric defensive organisation and settlement. The site forms an important element within the wider later prehistoric context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.
