Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

The monument, also known as Garrig yr Wyn (the stones of the lamb), comprise the remains of two earthfast prehistoric standing stones, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). Each standing stone is located on a natural rocky outcrop on the NW-facing slopes of Banc Cwmerfyn overlooking the Nant Silo valley. Item 'A' is the westernmost stone and is located at NGR SN 68532 83689. It is aligned ENE-WSW and measures 0.9m in height, 0.7m in length and 0.22m in width. It is rectangular in cross-section and tapers to a broad point. It leans slightly to the NW. Item 'B' is located upslope and c. 100m to the E at NGR SN 68628 83674. It is aligned NNE-SSW and measures 1.13m in height, 0.55m in length and 0.14m in width. The parallel sides rise to a blunt point.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric ritual practices. The monument is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of intact ritual deposits, together with structural evidence. The importance of the monument is further enhanced by the group value formed by the association of the two standing stones and their relationship with other standing stones to the E.

The scheduled areas comprise the remains described and areas around within which related evidence may be expected to survive. Areas 'A' and 'B' are centred on Items 'A' and 'B' respectively. Both are circular in shape and measure 6m in diameter.
