Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of two burial cairns, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 BC - 800 BC) and situated in upland pasture on a prominent knoll on the SE-facing slopes of Lan Fawr. The larger cairn (Item A) is roughly circular in shape on plan. It measures c. 17m in diameter and up to 1m tall. There is a small and shallow hollow visible upon the summit of the cairn. The smaller cairn (Item B) is situated c. 35m SW of the first. It is roughly circular in shape on plan and measures about 8.5m in diameter and up to 0.6m in height. It too has a small and shallow central depression. The central hollows in the cairns presumably indicate antiquarian investigation or robbing, although both cairns remain substantially intact.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The monument is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial or ritual deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is rectangular and centred on NGR SN 69393 49805. It measures 60m E-W by 45m transversely.
