Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

The monument comprises a small upland settlement, which probably dates to the prehistoric/Medieval period. The settlement consists of the ruined remains of two rectangular dwellings and a simple stone shelter built close beside the Nant Yspryd-gwyn. The two dwellings were 9 and 12m long respectively, with two internal compartments. The outer walls were stone but the roofs would have been constructed from perishable materials. The shelter may have been contemporary with the dwellings but could also have been used as a simple shepherd’s shelter.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric/medieval settlement. The monument forms an important element within the wider prehistoric/medieval context. The scheduled area may be expected to contain a wide range of archaeological information, including floor levels and other internal features preserved beneath the collapsed walling, as well as evidence in regard to chronological detail, construction techniques and agricultural methods. Rectangular huts may be part of a larger cluster of settlements and their importance can be further enhanced by their group value.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
