Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument, which probably dates to the medieval or post-medieval period, comprises a well preserved example of a three roomed long hut built on ground overlooking the Afon Diliw. The house was a substantial structure, with stone walls over 1m wide. The monument probably had more than one phase of construction and could have been occupied for a considerable period of time.
The monument is notable for its completeness and complexity and is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval or post-medieval settlement. The monument forms an important element within the wider landscape context. The scheduled area may be expected to contain a wide range of archaeological information, including chronological detail, floor surfaces and internal features and evidence in regard to construction techniques and agricultural methods. Rectangular huts may be part of a larger cluster of settlements and their importance can be further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
