Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a large burial cairn, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). It is situated at 320m above OD, on moorland above the head of a valley to the south-west but unusually overlooked by rising ground immediately to the north-west and north-east. It is c.15m in diameter and varies in height from 0.8m in the north-east to 1.3m in the south-west. It is composed of turf-covered shale stones, and small boulders. The centre has been dug away to a depth of 0.5m, over an area c.7m across.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The monument is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial or ritual deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. Cairns may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can be further enhanced by their group value.
