Cadw's description

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a round barrow, which probably dates to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). It is situated within open moorland on a gentle N-facing slope overlooking the Nant-y-Moch valley. The turf-covered mound is oval in shape on plan and measures 12.4m by 11.5m. It is flat-topped in profile and measures 1.2m in height. There are possible kerbstones on the E and SW sides of the mound and a shallow outer ditch can be traced on the E, S and W sides. The original scheduled area measured 45m in diameter and has been revised, as it was too large.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The feature is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of both intact ritual and burial deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence, including a buried prehistoric land surface.

The area to be scheduled comprises the remains described and an area around within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 20m in diameter.
