Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of an undisturbed burial cairn, which probably dates to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). It is situated on the summit of a local hill within an enclosed field of improved pasture. The stone-built and turf covered cairn is roughly circular in shape on plan and measures 12m in diameter and 0.75m in height. The upper part of the cairn resembles a flat platform in profile and measures 7m in diameter.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The well-preserved monument is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial and ritual deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 25m in diameter.
