Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of a prehistoric settlement site consisting of a large enclosure and three hut circles. The enclosure is roughly circular in plan, measuring 15m N/S and 16m E/W, and is bounded by a simple collapsed stone wall that has spread out to form a bank up to 2m wide and 0.3m high. The interior is level and may be slightly terraced into the slope. There is a probable entrance on the S side, around 1m wide. Three hut circles are located outside the enclosure, one 26m to the S which is 10m in diameter and has a possible entrance to the SE, a second 38m to the N which is 11m in diameter, and a the third 69m to the E which is 8m in diameter.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement organisation. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
