Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of an stone-built enclosure. The date or precise nature of the enclosure is unknown, but it is likely to be later prehistoric. The enclosure measures 23m by 18m and is defined by a stone spread, up to 0.6m high, with an entrance to the SE. The enclosure is cut by a later field wall at the northern end. The site is located on the top of a slight N/S orientated ridge which has natural rock outcrops and stones piles along it. Within the stony spread on the ridge are several areas of walling of uncertain date. The best defined is to the north of the enclosure where a clear wall runs towards a clearance cairn. This and other clearance cairns and stone platforms could be associated with the enclosure.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric defensive organisation and settlement. The site forms an important element within the wider later prehistoric context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
