Summary description and reason for designation
The following provides a general description of the scheduled monument.
The monument consists of the remains of a series of pillow mounds, pillow-shaped, flat topped rectangular mounds often surrounded by a shallow ditch used to farm rabbits. The site consists of at least 80 pillow mounds located within a walled enclosure. The pillow mounds are between 20m and 140m long, around 4m wide and up to 1.2m high and surrounded by ditches averaging 1.5m wide and 0.3m deep. A series of dry stone lined pits are also located on the site, possibly for use as rabbit traps, while a series of quadrilateral dry stone walled enclosures, measuring 18m long by 12m wide and containing pits may represent rabbit breeding pens.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of agricultural techniques. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
