Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the monument.

The monument consists of the remains of a long barrow situated on a low ridge above a small stream. The barrow measures 58m N/S by 22m wide at the N end and 12m wide at the S end. The barrow is highest at the northern end where it takes the form of a grass covered mound. At the southern end the remains of a small square chamber are visible, comprising 4 upright slabs forming three sides of a square, and further stones splayed out from the ends of the N/S aligned uprights forming possible additonal chambers or part of a passage. Further stones associated with the chamber are scattered around the southern end of the chamber area.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual. The monument is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial or ritual deposits and environmental and structural evidence, including a buried prehistoric land surface. Long barrows may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
