Summary description and reason for designation

The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.

The monument comprises the remains of an extensive group of round and rectangular huts that probably date to the Iron Age or Romano-British period (c. 800 BC - AD 400).

To the S, on ground sloping to the S, are the grassed-over remains of a circular bank, c. 0.2 m high and with an internal diameter of c. 4.0 m. There is an entrance on the E side. Some 30m to the NNW are the remains of another hut. The hut wall is of stone, c. 0.7 m high and 1.0 m wide, and the internal diameter of the hut is 7.0 m. The entrance faces E. Six metres NNE of this hut are three upright stones, 0.5 - 0.8 m high, which appear to form part of a stone bank which runs NNE - SSW and adjoins the W wall of the hut. These stones may mark the site of another hut, although they appear to belong to a field wall.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric domestic construction practices. The monument retains significant archaeological potential and there is a strong probability that structural evidence has survived, together with internal and external floor surfaces.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
