Location
Situated on corner of Conduit Lane.
History
Built in the earlier C19, apparently as a matching house to No 25 across Conduit Lane, and similar in some detail to No 20. Said to have been the site of a public house called Seren Cymru. By 1884 office of George Morgan, architect, and in 1926 of his son J. Howard Morgan. In 2002 antique shop premises below, offices above.
Exterior
House and shop, a pair with No 25. Three storeys, 3 bays, with slate gabled roof and red brick chimney to left. Rendered unpainted front with paired modillions to eaves cornice and painted ground floor. Tripartite 4-12-4-pane sashes originally to outer windows in upper floors with 12-pane sash between, surviving on second floor. First floor has C20 metal windows replacing outer ones, 12-pane sash to centre. Ground floor is painted, C20 3-pane shop window to each side of C20 central doorway with half-glazed door and overlight, flush surrounds. House doorway to right with C20 door.
Rendered left end wall without openings, rendered rear with varied windows.
Three-storey rear wing to Conduit Lane, rendered and of 4 bays. Four small square second-floor windows under eaves, 3 casement pairs, and a smaller 4-pane window to left. First floor 12-pane stair light and added 8-pane horned sash both set to right, in plain surrounds, and blind semi-circular lunette between them on ground floor. Two C20 doors, one wider, to far left. Band over ground floor.
Interior
Shop has altered interior. Staircase in door to right, similar to that in No 20 with stick balusters, turned slim newels and open scrolled string. First floor plaster cornice in hall, 6-panel doors with fielded panels and panelled reveals and 4-panel doors. Main room has moulded cornice, arched niches and marble fireplace. Tall painted wood shelved early C20 overmantel in room in rear wing with turned posts and arched heads to top shelf. Second floor doors with canted corners to door heads.
Reason for designation
Included with No 25 as a one of a prominent pair of late Georgian style houses, each side of Conduit Lane, and for surviving interior detail.
