Location

Set into hillside to N of Ednol Hill. Late C19 compact, planned farm steading, virtually unaltered since construction. House and outbuildings form U-shape around central fold yard.

Exterior

House: Two storeys, T-plan with lower service block to south-east. Coursed rubble on plinth, blue brick dressings. Yellow and blue header segmental arches to openings, tall thin panelled stacks in similar chequered, glazed brickwork. Two and three-light casement windows, framed plank front door with chamfered battens and decorative metal clasps to wooden lock.

Outbuildings: All of coursed rubble with blue and red brick dressings, ventilation slits and slate roofs, boarded doors and loft shutters. Adjoining west end of house, single-storey pony stable and four-bay open-fronted shed. Adjoining east end of house L-plan range of formerly open-fronted cowsheds with rear feeding passage. Two pigsties project from the south-east corner. On the north side of the yard, 2-storey cowhouse with 12 standings and loose box, wide feeding/entry passage with flagged floor, partially plastered-out loft above. Adjoining is barn/stable range. Three-bay barn with brick partition bases and bolted king-post trusses. Two storey stables for 6 working horses and end store room. The ground drops away to the north - the stables and cowhouse have small openings just above ground level to enable dung to be pushed out on to midden.

Interior

Four-panel doors, stairs with chamfered newel and stick balusters rising against the rear wall, beaded plank underside, massive stone flags on floor throughout.

Reason for designation

An unusually well-preserved farm grouping in an unspoilt upland setting.
