Location

Just N of Trearried Hall approximately 1km SE of the Church of Saint Matthew at Llandefalle.

History

Later C17 very large three-sided former stable court to Trebarried, gentry house of the Vaughan family, one of the most impressive formal stable courts of the county. Restored as houses c. 2001. Old photographs show the court with C17 cross-windows.

Exterior

Former stable court, now flats. Painted rubble stone with stone tiled hipped roofs, bell-cast at eaves. Two storeys and attic, three-sided courtyard with 8-bay N range, and 6-bay wings to E and W. Renewed gabled dormers, one to each S end, 3 to each wing and 3 to centre. Windows are replacement cross-windows, close-spaced in N range, wider in side wings. Thin stone sills. Flat heads with timber lintels to upper floor, cambered heads with thin brick arches to most of ground floor.
W wing has cambered-headed ground floor openings, with doors in second and fourth bays (formerly there were blind windows in third and fifth bays, doors in fourth and sixth). S end has two blind windows each floor. Centre N range has doors in first, fourth and eighth bays; brick cambered heads to left four openings, flat heads to right four with timber lintels, dripstone to eighth. (Formerly there were blind windows to first second, fourth and eighth windows above, a door in third bay below and two wide openings in fourth to seventh bays, blocked door in eighth). E wing has doors in second and fifth bays, all openings with flat heads and most with dripstones. S end has blind windows except to ground floor right. (Formerly there was a lower loft door in third bay, and on ground floor a door in first bay, a blocked low opening in third and a blocked broad opening in sixth).
Outer W side has two tall red brick wall-face stacks. Blocked cart entry to left and three cambered-headed windows each floor to right, with stair light at mid-height between first and second. Rear N has more scattered cambered-headed windows and one brick stack to right.

Reason for designation

Included for its special historic interest as a substantial later C17 three-sided lofted stable court, of exceptional scale and rarity.
