Set into the wall on the NW side of the house, facing the front garden.
History
Abbey Cwmhir Estate was purchased by Thomas Wilson in 1822. In 1824-5 he excavated the ruins of Cwmhir Abbey and salvaged numerous architectural fragments. The most important was the C13 tympanum, which was set into the garden wall at Home Farm, in which Wilson probably lived when he visited his estate.
Exterior
A freestone tympanum designed to be placed within a cusped pointed arch, depicting the Ascension in high relief. It is set into a coped rubble-stone garden wall approximately 20m long, retaining the farm yard on higher ground on the N side, and with modern steel railings.
Reason for designation
Listed for its special interest as the most significant of the medieval sculpture salvaged from Cwmhir Abbey, and for its contribution to the setting and historic character of Home Farm.
