Old house at Lower Cantal, including attached farm range

Location

Approximately 4km E of Llanbister, reached by farm road on the E side of a minor road between Crossways and Llanbister Road.

History

A late medieval cruck-framed house with 2-bay hall. It was converted to a storeyed house in the early C17, and then later rebuilt in stone. Fenestration and part rebuilding in brick, is C19. The house has been used as a store since a new house was built in the late C20.

Exterior

A 1½-storey 3-window house of rubble stone walls, roughcast to the rear and mostly rebuilt in brick to the front, and slate roof partly replaced by iron sheets, with brick stack set back from the L end, and fallen brick stack to the R. A replaced, boarded-up door is R of centre, with enlarged window to its R (without glazing), narrow window to its L and 2-light casement further L. Above are 3 half dormers with 2-light windows, except the R-hand where the glazing is missing, and where part of the jamb and the adjacent wall has fallen. The rear has an added lean-to with C20 windows. The wall has been taken down at the R end.

On the downhill (L) side of the house is a timber-framed farm range clad in weatherboarding, and the lower gable end rebuilt in blockwork. The rear is blockwork below weatherboarding.

Interior

Not inspected but RCAHM Wales survey recorded an arched-brace central cruck truss.

Reason for designation

Listed, notwithstanding its present condition, as a late-medieval cruck-framed house with C17 and C19 modifications, retaining regional vernacular character.
