Location

Located on the W side of the road approx 1.7km N of the village, and immediately SW of Pont yr Hendwr. The gable end faces the road.

History

C16-17 stone-walled field barn with raised cruck trusses.

Exterior

Four-bay barn constructed of random stone on boulder footings under a graded random slate roof. Raised stone copings to gables, with moulded kneelers. There are many ventilation slits to the walls, all deeply splayed and with stone lintels. The front faces S with central entrance to through-passage; high narrow doorway with flat head containing part split doors and corrugated iron sheeting. This is flanked by 2 tiers of ventilation slits. North side has rear doorway to through-passage; it is lower with split doors and a timber lintel, with large stones to R jamb. Second doorway inserted to R, for a wagon bay, but later narrowed. It has a planked door with timber lintel within a stone blocking. This wall has 2 tiers of ventilation slits. E gable end has 4 tiers of ventilation slits. W gable end has an inserted loft doorway to gable with stone lintel and sill. Two tiers of ventilation slits beneath.

Interior

The interior has 3 raised cruck trusses, all with tie beams. The W and central trusses have collars, whilst the E truss has raked struts; 2 purlins to each pitch; detail to the ridge pieces varies. No loft. Through-passage with opposing doors 2nd bay from E; some flagstones remain to floor, the sides demarcated by upright flagstones. Manger above flagstones to W side, with opening leading into W bays which are undivided, with further manger along S wall. A stone pier has been built against the infill of the wagon doorway. Corrugated iron sheeting above flagstones to E side of passage, with small planked door to R leading to E bays. Ground level inside barn is lower than outside; external ground levels may have been raised.

Reason for designation

Listed as a particularly fine and well-preserved example of a cruck-trussed field barn, with good external and internal detail. Group value with Pont yr Hendwr.
