Location

Cysulog is about 1 km north of Maerdy. The Old House and Cartshed block is to the NW of the present house.

History

The house has date panels for 1650 and 1652, the attached cartshed probably dates to the early C19. The house was re-arranged internally, around this time, with wooden dogleg stair. The house probably used as farm outbuilding after construction of new house circa 1900.

Exterior

House, one-and-a-half storeys, attached to lofted cartshed block. Mainly stone with slate roofs, some weatherboarding. House has large rectangular stone chimney to R. Gabled dormer with dripstone over wooden casement. On ground floor, doorway to L (boarded door), and window to R. Later doorways in L gable end. To R, house linked to cartshed by extending roof to form covered open bay. Lofted cartshed block of 2 bays with weatherboarded upper storey with 2 small windows. To R, stone stair up to doorway with boarded door at loft level.

Interior

Doorway gives onto lobby with wooden stair, stop-chamfered joists and beam above partition with horizontal boarding which separates lobby from rear room, also with stop-chamfered joists and small rear window. To R, post-and-panel partition has doorway with shallow ogee head. Main room with large longitudinal beam, stop-chamfered; stop-chamfered joists. Fireplace has stop-chamfered bressumer and has been narrowed in brick. Blocked window to rear of this room. At upper level, 2 rooms divided by partition with one blocked doorway, and a later doorway. Roof structure largely intact; curved principal rafters 2 sets of, heavy purlins. Old window frame partly survives. The L gable has extremely fine moulded plaster panel with strapwork, heraldic shield with mongram "D LL" and rose, and date "1650". The R gable has raised plaster date "1652".

Reason for designation

Grade II* as well-preserved mid C17 farmhouse with rare date panels and additional interest from attached early C19 cartshed block.
