Location

Located at the SE edge of the farm group, set with its SW gable end into the slope of a hill.

History

Early C17 barn, originally with timber-framed storey above a rubble ground floor and with tall rubble gable ends. The upper section was encased in rubble in the late C17 or possibly later. The evidence for the original arrangement is visible both internally and externally, with wall plates and wall posts partly exposed and clearly legible masonry breaks.

Exterior

Large, imposing barn of rubble under a medium-pitched slate roof with coped and kneelered gable parapets. Modern opening to house-facing side with modern window to the R. Above, under the eaves, are 3 rows of nesting niches, 21 to each row, the bottom row of which has a projecting slate ledge. Original wide entrance to centre with contemporary chamfered oak lintel and replaced side posts. 3 vertical ventilation slits to R, with a further 3 to the hill-facing gable end; the apex of this is a modern rebuild. Opposing entrance to corresponding long side, with exposed timber lintel. Flanking this are two large window openings with boarded shutters and exposed timber lintels. Modern upper loading bay to NE gable, possibly a widened original opening.

Interior

6-bay roof with pegged collar-and-tie-beam trusses and wall posts with straight struts; most purlins and parts of the ridge are original. Bay 4 is floored over and has pronounced ogee stops to the main beam and has a later C19 overhead driveshaft and wheels; later rubble dividing wall between bays 3 and 4.

Reason for designation

A fine C17 barn with evidence for former timber framing.
