Location

Located off the W side of the road in a low-lying position at the S end of Trefeglwys community.

History

A C17 storeyed lobby-entry house, originally 2-unit with entrance offset to centre and jettied N gable end. A 3rd unit was added to this end c1800. The S gable end was rebuilt in random stone. Substantial alterations were undertaken in the C19; the stack was rebuilt in brick, a new hipped roof was constructed, and a large L-shaped brick wing was added to the rear. This wing is shown on the Tithe map of 1848. The porch is probably of this period. Further alterations occurred c2000 when uPVC windows were inserted.

Exterior

A 2-storey 3-window lobby-entry house with entrance to L of centre. The original 2 units are timber-framed, comprising 4 tiers of good quality box-framing on a stone plinth, the N gable end jettied at both mid-rail and gable level. The 3rd unit, added against the N gable end, has 5 tiers of box-framing. C19 shallow hipped slate roof and narrow red brick ridge stack, slate-hung to S side. Gabled timber-framed porch under a slate roof, the doorway under a shallow decorated archway, and with side-lights. Inside the porch is a late C20 half-glazed panelled door. Replacement uPVC windows within the box panels, single-light to L of porch, 2-light to R, and narrow single light to far R. The upper storey is 4-window, all single lights of various sizes. The S end is of random stone and has a single uPVC light to the upper L, partly within brickwork. The N end is weather-boarded and painted black-and-white, with a uPVC light to each storey.

Victorian red brick additions to rear, consisting of a 2-storey wing to centre with brick end stack and slate-hung gable end, the roofline continuous with the main range: to its L is a lean-to porch against the main range, and on its R, a full-height lean-to. The porch has a late C20 part-glazed wooden door under a shallow canopy and its N side is painted black-and-white; main range above is slate hung. Most of the windows have segmental brick heads and contain late C20 top-hung uPVC windows, except for a large 3-light wooden window under a concrete lintel to N side of wing.

Reason for designation

Listed as a C17 lobby-entry farmhouse retaining its vernacular character and with good quality timber-framing, notwithstanding alteration to external detail.
