Location

Aligned east-west in disused yard, about 70m S of the Watton.

History

Late C18 or early C19? Shown on 1834 plan of Brecknock; also shown on this plan is the Brecknock Boat Company’s Wharf which extended from the Brecon and Abergavenny Canal into the yard adjoining the barn.
Abandoned, overgrown, and not fully accessible in 2005, but described in old list entry as "Two sections separated by a stone wall. North-west section with ground floor ceiled over and with chimney; in South-west elevation, entrances at ground level; boarded door in doorway with cambered head, two cartsheds with segmented heads of dressed stone, second one with modern window above it on first floor. South-east section comprising barn proper of five bays with waggon entry with slate canopy in centre of south wall; corresponding entrance in north wall is blocked with stone. At south-east end, main roof forms pentice over two-storey lean-to structure against southern wall; two storeys; arrow loop window above; on ground floor, doorway with dressed stone head to left hand and window with brick dressings to right hand."

Exterior

Large barn with stone rubble walls and half-hipped roof, mainly of modern corrugated covering to N, and of slate to S, with small brick chimneys. South elevation has 2 camber-headed cart entries, and a C20 window above with brick dressings; similar window further to R. Towards R end, main roof sweeps down to form pentice over two-storey lean-to structure. There are further ground floor openings between this and the cart entrances to L.

Reason for designation

Barn, retaining historic character and with possible added historic interest from connection with Brecon and Abergavenny Canal.
