Location

Situated about 1 km NW of Alltmawr, but reached via minor lane to Llanddewi 'r Cwm parallel to main road.

History

Late C17 or early C18 gentry house, latterly a farmhouse, and in a state of advanced dereliction (late 2000). A plaster cartouche said to be have been in an outbuilding gave a date of 1715 and Richard Price as the owner. Marked on the Alltmawr Tithe map of 1840 as a holding of 207 acres (83.77 hectares) owned by Mary Price and occupied by Thomas Bowcot.The plan may be a cruciform plan like The Neuadd, Crickadarn, but the staircase does not appear to be in the rear wing as it is at The Neuadd, and the rear wing here maybe a kitchen wing.

Exterior

House, rubble stone with slate roofs and one rubble stone stack, to left end. Two-storey formal three-bay facade with big projecting hipped porch bay between two unusual long windows that have casement glazing at each floor and fixed glazing between floors, stone voussoirs to cambered heads. Porch bay has long cambered-headed first floor window with stone voussoirs and 8/8 pane casements, and is cemented below over entry with flat head (arched head in 1962 list description). Within porch are stone seats and a 6-panel door with 4 fielded panels.
A lower service wing to right has stone end stack with shelf cornice. One long 3-pane window with timber lintel, and door to left. Windowless end gable, rear wall rebuilt in early C20 brick. A rear wing at right angles to main house has stone end stack but front wall rebuilt in rendered brick with C20 metal window each floor.

Interior

Interior not accessible due to condition. In 1962 said to have contemporary staircase and panelled partitions.

Reason for designation

Included on list despite condition as a late C17 to early C18 gentry house of important regional character in showing the transition to Renaissance formality.
