Location

Approximately 0.8km NNE of Partrishow church, on E side of a minor road through Grwyne Fawr valley.

History

Originally a timber-framed medieval long house. The house was rebuilt in stone in the C17, consisting of a hall with parlour and pantry. The byre was rebuilt in stone C18 and incorporated a cross passage backing on to the hall fireplace. Behind the byre a kitchen was also built early C18. The house was then remodelled early-mid C19 with new fenestration.

Exterior

Two-storey farm house with lower former byre, generally of random rubble sandstone and slate roof (byre roof recently renewed). The house has a 3-window C19 front of coursed rubble with bigger quoins and stone lintels and sills, C17 stone stack to R and C19 stone stack to L. In its upper storey are 9-pane hornless sashes L and R (lately replaced in centre), a similar window lower L and later horned sash lower R. To extreme R is boarded lean-to porch with boarded doors. In L gable end is infilled former doorway upper R and inserted attic window upper L. Three-window rear elevation has late C19 casements and added lean-to to L.

The byre is lower and built on a sloping site. It has a wide cross passage doorway to L under a timber lintel, immediately R of which is a doorway lately inserted in place of a window. L of centre is a modern window in earlier opening, R of centre a boarded stable door under timber lintel. Further R is a similar stable door with modern window to its R in C19 opening. Loft opening L of centre has replaced window. R gable end has an added lean-to at low level, below the level of the yard to front. In the lower storey is a C17 window with timber surround, above which is a loft window with diamond mullions (2 of 4 surviving). The rear of byre has a lean-to kitchen clad in corrugated iron sheets.

Interior

The only surviving feature of the original long house is a single cruck truss later incorporated into the cross passage wall. The truss has a collar beam and stands on timber sills above floor level. In the hall is a post-and-panel partition, which has a doorway to parlour with segmental pointed head and original boarded door with strap hinges. The partition also survives between the parlour and dairy. The dairy has a single salting slab and a flagstone floor. A fireplace stair has original ledged and battened door from the hall.

Reason for designation

A sub-medieval farm house with earlier origins, retaining a C17 plan form and good interior detail.
