Location

Situated on the SW side of St Julian's Street opposite Borough House and Sergeants Lane.

History

Earlier C19 house in terraced row with narrow 2-window front, possibly originally a pair with No 2 which has one window range with door to outer side. No 1 may have had windows added over door and stucco detail added in mid C19. Rear wall suggests that this house is later than Griffith Lodge adjoining.

Exterior

Terraced house, painted stuccoed street elevation of 4 storeys, 2 narrow bays and parapet with coved cornice. Slate hipped valley roof. Plain 2-pane hornless sashes in moulded stucco surrounds, those on 3rd floor plain, shouldered surrounds to other 3 floors, and with cornices to first and ground floors. Recessed arched door to right in stucco surround of Ionic pilasters and entablature. Six-panelled door and fanlight with delicate metal tracery. Wrought-iron railings with spearhead finials on low coping to basement area. Matching iron gate to basement steps to left. Slate steps down, one fixed window and panelled door. Coal-hole entry opposite.
Rear to sea is slate-hung with parapet, one range with No 2, the left corner built over corner of Griffith Lodge, 4-storey, 2-bay range with small-paned sashes. 12-pane to top floor, 16-pane to 2nd floor, 24-pane to first floor, opening onto balcony and French window to left of 24-pane sash to ground floor.

Interior

Stair hall within with stair on right wall, rising from end of passage. Narrow open well, single flight up curving to first floor landing with scrolled tread ends, stick balusters and ramped rail. Thick turned newel at foot, niche in curve. Ground floor doorcases are fluted with square blocks at upper angles. Plainer room to street front with moulded cornice and panelled shutters. Elliptical-arched recess. Large sea-front room has elliptical-arched recess with panelled arch and fluted pilasters. Painted slate fireplace. Leaf motif to cornice, vine-trail to ceiling border with anthemion in corners. Panelled shutters. First floor has similar panelled doors and doorcases, similar moulded cornice to front room, but rose and honeysuckle ceiling border. Similar flight of stairs up to second floor landing. Second floor has panelled doors in reeded doorcases. Third floor has 4-panel doors.

Reason for designation

Included as stuccoed terraced house in sequence of tall late Georgian style houses along St Julian's Street.
