Situated just W of Abbey ruin.

History

Double group of farm-buildings erected c1870-75 as part of the general rebuilding of the farms on the island by the 3rd Baron Newborough. The largest such group as it comprises 2 farm courts, each serving a pair of semi-detached farms and thus having 4 sets of some buildings within the double walled courts.

Exterior

Paired farm courts, each serving 2 farms. Rubble stone with slate roofs within enclosing walls with squared stone capping. Paired entrances in E side through semi-elliptical arches of brick. The single-storey outbuildings are arranged against the enclosing walls of the courts, in roughly mirror image, thus the main L-plan ranges have short arms flanking the entrance arches and long arms down N and S sides. These ranges, as in the other island farmyards, comprise a barn, cowhouse, cartshed and stable. Separate double pig kitchens and double pigsties are arranged back-to-back against the wall separating the 2 courts. Stable type doors with slab lintels, windows small-paned above boarding, cart-entries with brick shallow arches. Pig kitchens have red brick chimney on ridge and 2 doors to each gable end.

Inside southern court, the L-plan range has cart-entry, door, window and door in the short arm and wooden stairs to loft door in gable end with window over. Door, window, door, door, window, door, vent loop, in the long arm. Rear wall has 3 loops at upper level, 2 doors left, door centre, door and window right. The opposite N side has lean-to pigsties in NW corner with stone yard walls and pig-kitchen gable projecting centrally, with 2 gable-end doors and window in each side wall. Red brick ridge stack serving all 4 kitchens.

The opposite N court is similar in arrangement but the L-plan block is shorter. Cart-entry and door in the short arm with gable end loft door and window. Window, 3 doors and loop in the long arm.

Cobbled paths along fronts of buildings.

Interior

Similar interior details to other farm-courts. Cobbled floors to stables and cow-houses, slate to barns with wooden inset threshing floors. Slate-floored pig-kitchens.

Reason for designation

Included as a distinctive paved and double farmyard, which is a good example of later C19 model farm planning, of group value with the Abbey and other listed buildings, and part of a remarkable series of model farms on the island.
