Former stable at The Old Rectory

Location

Approximately 100m S of the parish church, set back from the road behind a walled front garden, on the N side of the junction with a minor road to Nannerch school.

History

The Old Rectory is an C18 house extended in 1813, and partially combined with Rectory Cottage in the late C20. The stable was probably built in the third quarter of the C19, in spite of the fact that its details are similar to the coach house shown on the 1838 Tithe map, and it is first shown on the 1871 Ordnance Survey.

Exterior

Of rubble stone with shallow brick segmental heads, and slate roof with inserted skylights and brick stack to the L. Facing the yard at the back of the Old Rectory, the main doorway to the L has a boarded door, with window to the R boarded loft door beneath the eaves. The lean-to on the L side has a boarded door under a segmental head. The lean-to set back on the R has a widened doorway under a concrete lintel. The rear has an added lower gabled projection obscuring 2 pitching eyes in the original rear wall (visible inside the building).

Reason for designation

Listed as a stable retaining C19 character, for group value with The Old Rectory and as part of a group of buildings S of the church contributing historic character to the village.
