Location

Approached by a track off the west side of the Usk-Caerleon road which is near the junction with the Tredunnock road. It is about 1600m south west of Llangybi village.

History

This house is said to be a c1600 'Regional-style' 2-room plan house which was heightened probably in the late C18 or early C19, which has been altered, and extended into the adjoining outhouse, during the C20.

Exterior

The house is wholly rendered and painted, probably over local rubblestone, and has an interlocking concrete tile roof. It has two storeys and is in two sections with the original house to the right, an outbuilding now incorporated with it to the left and a single storey bakehouse to the left of that. The main section has two, probably late Victorian, sash windows with 6 over 6 panes. Central door in a modern gabled porch. The eaves were evidently raised, probably in the early C19, and it has a moderate pitch roof with a gable stack to the right. Former outbuilding to left, now united with the house, has two modern windows above a door and a wider window. This section also appears to have been raised. Slightly steeper pitched roof with an external stack to the left gable. The former bakehouse also has a modern window. Rear elevation not seen. Fox and Raglan reported a diamond mullion window but no mention was made of that in 1980.

Interior

Not available for inspection at resurvey. The list description (1980) reported a chimney with a spiral stair beside it at the right hand end. There is a post and panel partition opposite to this with a Tudor-headed doorway. The inner room to the left of this, which was formerly subdivided, has two subsidiary chimneys. Fox and Raglan reported 'Wern-hir stops'.

Reason for designation

Included as a c1600 house which retains architectural character despite alteration.
