Location
Situated on the S side of Tudor Square between Athol House and Tudor House.
History
Early C19 or earlier house, a pair with Tudor House, both much remodelled after a fire in 1898. Rebuilt c1903 to designs by J Preece Jones of Tenby. York House was called Manchester House in 1898. The deeds are said to go back to 1750. Occupied in 2001 by The Dainty gift shop. Old photographs show a pair of 2 bay houses lined as ashlar with cornice and parapet, arched door to Tudor House and canted full-height bay to left at York House.
Exterior
Commercial premises with accommodation over, painted lined stucco with slate roof behind parapet and brick left end stack. Basement and 3 storeys, 2 bays, attic dormer behind parapet, moulded cornice. Two storey bay to left with 2-4-2-pane sashes and moulded cornices resting on ground floor projecting shopfront. Right side has 4-pane sash to both upper floors over square-headed doorway, not quite aligned. Six-panel door with margin-glazed overlight. Shopfront has big panelled pilaster to left with double-curved bracket over, fascia with dentilled cornice and decorative iron cresting over. Single large plate-glass pane to front, narrow pane canted in to right to front wall.
Reason for designation
Included as one of a pair of turn-of-the-century commercial facades of importance in Tudor Square.
