Location

Set back from the E side of the B5111 on the southern approach to the village of Llanerchymedd. The farmhouse forms the centrepiece of the farmstead; the main farm range is formed in a semi-circle to the rear.

History

Mid-late C19 farmhouse. The farmhouse forms the centrepiece of a planned farmstead, built by the Plas Newydd estate to replace the original farmstead, known as 'Ty Hen' (the site of which is in the neighbouring field). 'Ty Hen' is recorded in the Tithe Schedule of the parish, 1841, as being a holding of over 19 acres, owned by The Marquis of Anglesey and farmed by Owen Jones.

Exterior

Mid-late C19 farmhouse; a 2-storey, 3-window range extended by single-storey, brick built addition to R (S) and modern porch to rear. The house is built of rubble masonry, the principal elevation faced with roughly dressed stone laid roughly to courses. Hipped slate roof with dressed stone end stacks with capping; L (N) stack rendered. The principal elevation faces the road to the W; modern door and windows with smooth rendered architraves, the original voussoir heads still visible. The rear elevation has metal framed casement, 1st floor windows; modern brick built addition along ground floor. The single storey brick built addition to R (S) has a gabled slate roof with rendered gable stack with capping. The front elevation has a single modern casement window and the rear elevation has a door at the far R (N) and a single 6-pane horned sash window to L.

Reason for designation

Listed notwithstanding modern alterations and additions, as a good mid-late C19 estate farmhouse, built as the centrepiece of the planned farmstead group at Ty Hen Newydd. Both the symmetrical plan of the farmstead and the quality of the detailing in the buildings reflect the use of pattern books on the progressive estates in the C19.
