Location

Near road junction in centre of Gileston village, about 200m east of the Church of St Giles.

History

Late C17, with later additions to ends, and late C20 re-positioning of the front door, enlargement of the windows and addition to the rear. All external features are late C20.

Exterior

Buff-grey local rubble which is now plastered and limewashed, thatched roof with decorated ridge, end chimneys in stone, that to the left square, raised in brick, rectangular stone stack to right gable. On the ground floor, to each end, a doorway with 4-centred arch; left arch blocked, the right hand one with late C20 boarded door. This doorway and its surround has been moved and was previously one bay to the left opposite the front gate. Between the doors are two large casement windows the 3-lights and transoms over. First floor has two 3-light small-pane casement windows as before, a 2-light one between them and small window to left; this last, together with the doorway below, are the only pre-late C20 openings. To the right is a lean-to with boarded door, chimney to right, two small windows in gable end above. To the left a lean-to with modern tiled roof, and 2 windows to north end. Rear elevation with lean-to and all late C20 windows.

Interior

Interior not available at resurvey, but the house has evidently been much remodelled in the late C20. RCAHMW recorded it previous to these alterations showing a baffle entry through the left-hand doorway, a gable fireplace with oven and a firestair. The doorway which was in the centre was presumably an C18 insertion, although the surround is older.

Reason for designation

Included, notwithstanding modern alterations, for its special interest as a C17 building on an important site in the centre of village, and now a rare surviving building to retain the traditional thatched roof covering of the Vale of Glamorgan.
