Set back from the S side of Llaneilian Road at the junction with the turn off to Bod-Ednyfed.

History

Independent chapel erected in 1826 and enlarged in 1861, extended by the addition of the schoolroom range in the early C20

Exterior

Neo-classical urban chapel with later schoolroom set at an angle to the SE. Rendered elevations, slate roofs; schoolroom range with tiled ridge. The gable entry chapel has a Stucco rendered, symmetrically arranged, elevation of 3 bays. The outer bays are slightly advanced with tall windows flanked by engaged Tuscan pilasters on moulded sill bands and with moulded cornice continued as moulded open gable pediment. The openings all have moulded round arched heads with keystones on engaged Tuscan pilasters. The central doorway has panelled double doors above which is a tripartite window; sill band on shaped corbels. There is a rusticated arch with keystone within the open moulded pediment; a plaque within the arch reads: CARMEL / INDEPENDENT CHAPEL / ERECTED 1826 / ENLARGED 1861. The chapel is of 3 bays with 16-pane sash windows in round headed frames irregularly spaced along the R (W) lateral wall.
The early C20 schoolroom range comprises a linear range set at an angle to the main chapel, with taller gabled hall set as crosswing to L end. Rendered elevations, slate roof with clay ridge tiles and tall brick axial stack to L; shaped gable parapets with stone coping to full-height gable entrance to hall at far L and 2 smaller gables to its R, RH bay incorporates splayed vestibule. The main entrance is at the far L end of the range and gives entry to a hall which is set at right angles to the rest of the range. The panelled doorway is flanked by narrow, small-paned lights and recessed between engaged pilasters with moulded cornice. Above the cornice is a large, semi-circular, small-paned window within a keyed moulded arch; timber portico over doorway below; return elevation has 4 small-paned casement windows along its length. There is another entrance to the range through a camber headed doorway (with hoodmould) to the splayed vestibule at the R end of the range, flanking windows are narrow small-paned lights, 1 to R and 2 to L. Paired, small-paned windows to each of the gabled bays between.

Reason for designation

Listed as a good mid C19 chapel with fine Neo Classical facade. The schoolroom is a well-preserved essay in the 'Art Nouveau' characteristic of early C20 chapel architecture.
